Preview: Celtic vs St. Mirren

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side head into Wednesday’s Premiership clash with St. Mirren in something of a wobble in form, with the Bhoys having won one, drawn one and lost two of their last four fixtures in all competitions.

Indeed, the 2-0 second leg Europa Conference League loss to Bodo/Glimt and the 0-0 draw with Hibernian last weekend marked the first time the Hoops have failed to score a single goal in back to back games under the management of the 56-year-old coach, a run that Postecoglou will undoubtedly be hoping to end against the Saints.

In order to do so, the Greek-Australian manager must ensure he gets his team selection spot on against his side’s eighth-placed opposition this evening – with a win appearing an absolute must if the Bhoys are to keep their Premiership title charge on track.

So, will Postecoglou make any changes that started the stalemate with Hibs on Sunday? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against St. Mirren, as well as the latest team and injury news…

With Ange Postecoglou recently revealing that he has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Wednesday’s fixture – although Giorgos Giakoumakis remains a doubt due to illness, while Kyogo Furuhashi, David Turnbull, Mikey Johnston and Albian Ajeti all remain sidelined with hamstring injuries – we predict that Postecoglou will make two changes to the side that started the 0-0 draw in Edinburgh last time out.

In defence, the back five remain untouched, with Joe Hart starting between the sticks, while Greg Taylor, Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Josip Juranovic make up the defensive quartet.

There is one alteration in the middle of the park, with the £21.5k-per-week Rogic – who Brendan Rodgers once dubbed “languid” – dropping out of the XI after a poor run of form, and Matt O’Riley coming in alongside Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor.

In attack, Jota and Daizen Maeda keep their starting spots on the left and up top respectively – with Giakoumakis more likely to start on the bench if he is deemed fit enough to feature – while Liel Abada makes way for the 19-year-old “wonderkid” – in the words of Football Tweet – Karamoko Dembele on the right.

Henri Lansbury fails to impress Aston Villa fans after first team opportunity

Aston Villa’s hopes of gaining automatic promotion to the English Premier League suffered a massive setback on Saturday evening after they failed to beat Hull City away from home.

The 0-0 stalemate means Steve Bruce’s side have failed to win in their last three English Championship matches and now find themselves nine points behind second-placed Cardiff City, having played a game more, and two points behind third-placed Fulham.

Hopes had been high the Villans would have enough to see off struggling Hull, but in failing to create enough opportunities and missing the ones they did fashion, supporters were left bitterly disappointed.

[ad_pod ]

Much of the criticism was aimed at Henri Lansbury, who was starting his first match since December, given a massive chance to impress in the heart of midfield.

Fans were not impressed however, with many questioning Bruce’s decision to give him a start over the likes of Conor Hourihane.

Alasdair Gold on Spurs and Dybala

Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for soon-to-be free agent Paulo Dybala, but only if Antonio Conte asks for it.

That’s according to Football London’s Alasdair Gold, addressing Spurs supporters in a Q&A.

The lowdown

Dybala is expected to leave Juventus at the end of the season when his contract expires. Talks between the two parties over a new deal at the club’s Continassa headquarters broke down earlier this week.

Italian journalist Giancarlo Padovan subsequently claimed that Spurs are working to sign him on a free transfer.

Dybala has scored 113 goals and provided 48 assists in 283 appearances for Juventus, including 13 and six so far this season (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

Asked if a move for Dybala is ‘a real possibility’, Gold raised concerns about the player’s potential salary demands and his injury record (Football London).

He doesn’t think managing director of football Fabio Paratici is particularly ‘desperate’ to do a deal, but raises the possibility that Spurs could make an approach ‘because Antonio Conte has requested them to’.

The manager, though, may harbour some concerns himself about Dybala’s physical readiness.

The verdict

The injury problems to which Gold refers are pretty severe.

Dybala has been sidelined for a total of 61 matches during his time in Turin, according to Transfermarkt records.

The issue appears to be frequency rather than severity – Dybala has encountered 17 separate issues, but only one has kept him out for more than eight matches. These sort of persistent problems often prove incredible frustrating for player, manager and fans.

As for wages, Dybala is currently earning in excess of £220,000 per week, which is only slightly more than Harry Kane (£200,000). But if he’s demanding a significant hike – as is often the case with free signings – then the deal may simply not be viable.

In other news, could this be a more realistic free agent signing?

Better than Anderson & Wharton: Man Utd join race to sign £52m midfielder

Manchester United’s spending spree in the summer transfer window was certainly needed for Ruben Amorim if he was to be a success during his time at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old was backed with over £200m worth of funds to improve his Red Devils squad, subsequently directing the vast majority into the attacking third.

Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha were the big-money trio who arrived at Old Trafford, which quickly completed the makeover of the forward department.

However, Amorim may have made a mistake by not adding a new midfielder to his ranks, with issues consistently arising in such a position during the early stages of the Premier League season.

The upcoming January window hands him the opportunity to rectify such mistakes and hopefully push for a place in the top four come the end of the campaign.

United considering move for £52m midfield sensation

In an attempt to improve the options at the heart of the side, United have been linked with numerous targets, but none more so than Crystal Palace youngster Adam Wharton.

The 21-year-old has been a player they have been tracking for many months, but have never made a formal approach for his signature up until the present day.

That could change in January, especially given the recent rumours, which have strongly linked the Eagles sensation with a winter switch back up North in the coming months.

However, Wharton isn’t the only player currently in their sights, with Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi a player who the hierarchy have been spotted watching in recent months.

According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils see the 18-year-old as the perfect long-term Casemiro replacement, but also as an immediate option to improve the depth at Old Trafford.

They also claim that Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG are all in the race to land the teenager, with the Ligue 1 outfit currently demanding a fee in the region of €60m (£52m) for his services.

Why Bouaddi would be better than Anderson & Wharton

Alongside Wharton, Elliot Anderson has been yet another midfielder who has been touted with a move to join United ahead of January, but he would likely be the most expensive addition.

The Nottingham Forest star has endured a huge rise over the last couple of months, even becoming a regular starter under Thomas Tuchel within the England setup.

He’s also featured in every minute of the Reds’ league campaign during 2025/26, which has resulted in a £100m asking price ahead of the upcoming window.

Such a fee could prove to be out of the Red Devils’ price range, especially considering their club-record still stands at £89m for the signing of Paul Pogba back in 2016.

However, a deal for Bouaddi could be a blessing in disguise, with the teenager arguably already a bigger talent than both of the aforementioned targets.

At just 18, he has bags of time to reach the next level in his development at Old Trafford, potentially allowing for a bargain transfer at his reported £52m asking price.

When comparing his stats to those of Anderson and Wharton from the ongoing campaign, the French superstar has massively outperformed the pair in numerous key areas – showcasing the talent he possesses.

Bouaddi, who’s been dubbed “world-class” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has registered 1.8 progressive carries and an 84% pass completion rate so far this season.

Such numbers showcase his incredible ability in possession, with both of the aforementioned stats higher than those produced by Anderson and Wharton in 2025/26.

The Frenchman has also completed 70% of the take-ons he’s attempted, subsequently being able to drive the ball into dangerous areas and create carnage in attacking areas.

Without the ball, the teenager has been just as impressive, as seen in his 69% tackle success rate, which once again is higher than those produced by the other targets.

Other numbers, such as 1.2 clearances per 90 and 60% aerials won, further showcase his incredible talents despite his tender age, with the Red Devils potentially getting a bargain.

There’s no doubt the aforementioned duo would be many fans’ first choice to fill the role ahead of January, but a deal for Bouaddi would certainly be the best option. After all, there is a reason he has been described as one of “the best young talents in world football” by the Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

At just 18, he has plenty of time to continue his phenomenal development, not to mention being a cheaper option, which could help the club return to their former glory.

Man Utd could see a £35m bid accepted to sign their own version of Wharton

Manchester United transfer news: Sir Alex chases Black Cats keeper

Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet  is aware that he is being linked with Manchester United but insists he is happy at the Stadium of Light.

The Belgium website RTBF reported that last week the 24-year-old shot stopper was being courted by the Red Devils.

Mignolet has not heard of anything concrete about the possibility of a move to Old Trafford but insists that it is ‘nice’ to be mentioned alongside a club such as Manchester United.

“I have read the information (about Manchester United) on the internet, but I do not know,” he told Belgian paper Nieuwsbald.

“This is obviously very nice to be linked with such a big city team, but for now, I feel good in Sunderland.”

Despite the link with one of the giants of world football, Mignolet also wanted to assure Sunderland fans that he was still committed to life at the Stadium of Light.

His agent Guy Vandersmissen was quick to back up the comments and revealed that there are negotiations about a new contract with the Black Cats.

“There is currently negotiating an extension with Sunderland. We’ll see if we reached an agreement.

“Several journalists and coaches say he is now at the same level as Joe Hart.”

Mignolet moved to the North East of England in 2010 after joining from Sint-Truiden where he spent five years and has claimed the number one jersey after initial rivalries with Craig Gordon and Keiren Westwood.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill will not want his star keeper to leave the club but his Premier League rival Sir Alex Ferguson hopes the lure of Manchester United can work in the Scotsman’s favour.

Player Ratings: Three players who disappointed England fans most vs Croatia

England’s World Cup dream came to an unceremonious end last night as they crashed out of the semi finals courtesy of an extra time goal from Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic.

It was all going so well for the Three Lions, with Kieran Trippier netting a fifth-minute free kick, but the match seemed to slip away from them and eventually, Gareth Southgate’s team just didn’t have enough energy to respond after going 2-1 down with eleven minutes left on the clock.

[ad_pod ]

Nobody can fault the level of commitment shown, but it was by no means England’s strongest performance at this World Cup either, with certain key players struggling to really assert themselves on the game.

After the semi final defeat, we asked England fans to issue performance ratings for each of those involved – here’s a rundown of the three men who disappointed them the most, picking up the lowest average scores…

Jesse Lingard – 5.3: He’s been one of England’s most dependable players at this tournament, in terms of both industry and creativity, but Lingard struggled to make much of a mark against Croatia. The Manchester United midfielder created just two chances in 120 minutes and none of his attempts at goal – including a glorious opportunity from the edge of the box – managed to test the goalkeeper. By no means a disgraceful performance, but one where nothing quite came off for him.

Dele Alli – 5.1: Alli found it even harder to make an impact against Croatia, during a game in which he always seemed to be a few yards too deep trying to protect Jordan Henderson rather than giving the likes of Luca Modric and Ivan Rakitic problems going the other way. The Tottenham star failed to take a single effort at goal, which pretty much sums up his evening.

Harry Kane – 4.8: Was Kane fully fit? He certainly didn’t look quite right during the second half and seemed to be suffering from mental fatigue. Wednesday night was the kind of occasion in which England’s most valuable asset should be stepping up, but the Spurs talisman just couldn’t do it – his hold-up play wasn’t as effective as it was against Sweden, and he scuppered his best chance of finding the net by hitting the post from a yard out.

Rangers endured George Edmundson howler

Rangers chief Ross Wilson joined the club in 2019 and has overseen a number of transfer windows since arriving at Ibrox.

Not every single sale and signing is going to work out perfectly or be greeted with applause from the fanbase and the Gers sporting director has had his share of successes and mishaps.

One of the latter came last summer when he decided to cash in on central defender George Edmundson, after then-boss Steven Gerrard loaned him out to Derby the previous season.

Wilson sanctioned the sale of Edmundson to English League One outfit Ipswich Town ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. The Tractor Boys reportedly agreed a deal worth £1m in total to sign the defender and he has thrived south of the border.

Ipswich reporter Andy Warren dubbed him “Mr Consistent” earlier this term and his statistics for the club back that tag up. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.04 in League One across 32 games, winning 186 duels at a success rate of 63% as the third tier side have kept 13 clean sheets.

Edmundson has averaged 2.3 tackles and interceptions and 4.0 clearances per game. This shows that he has been sublime at the back for the Blues as he has been consistently winning the ball back and clearing danger for his team throughout the season.

In the 2020/21 campaign, he averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.78 for Derby in the Championship. He won 61% of his duels and he showed that he has the ability to be a reliable option at that level, with the Englishman now proving he can be a standout in the division below.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop. He is still very young for a centre-back and has the potential to grow throughout his career, increasing his value further and meaning that Rangers have missed out on a much bigger payday down the line.

Sending him out on loan to Ipswich, or another club, may have been a better decision from a financial point of view instead of cashing in on him for £1m. That way, the Gers would have been able to watch him improve before either giving him a chance in their first-team or selling him for more than the £1m they got for him – as his current performances are above and beyond what he has shown previously and that may raise his price tag.

Instead, Rangers are now watching him excel at Portman Road on a permanent basis and, therefore, Wilson had a howler with this particular deal…

18 months after leaving Leeds, £22m star is a bigger talent than Archie Gray

It’s a very Merry Christmas to be a fan of Leeds United, with the revitalised Whites sealing a 4-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace last time out to keep their red-hot form in December up.

Indeed, Daniel Farke’s men are yet to actually taste defeat across the jam-packed month, with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea also sticking out, away from the sensational success over Oliver Glasner’s team, ramping up the festive cheer at Elland Road.

Leeds look set to go against the idea that the newly promoted sides are just relegation fodder ready to be swallowed up by the bigger teams, with Farke and Co only two points shy off Tottenham Hotspur occupying 14th spot, who have former West Yorkshire prodigy Archie Gray on their books.

Safe to say, he has experienced an up-and-down stay in North London since walking away from his boyhood employers.

How Archie Gray has developed since leaving Leeds

Gray’s senior stint at Leeds would go by in the blink of an eye, with one standout season in the Championship for the Whites enough to attract the attention of Spurs in the division above.

The Premier League giants forked out a high £30m for the teenager’s services in the summer of 2024, and while it hasn’t entirely been a smooth ride for Gray so far at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there have been enough glimpses here and there of his top quality to justify that lavish price tag.

59 first-team appearances have passed him by with no goals or assists, but his versatile nature will surely have impressed Thomas Frank at the Spurs helm, with Gray lining up all across the defence, as well as completing his usual midfield duties.

The under-pressure Dane has also waxed lyrical about the England U21 regular in Champions League action this season, with Gray lauded as being “joyful to watch” and an assured member of the senior side against Paris St Germain by his manager.

He has stood out on the continental stage of late, notably winning four duels and making two tackles against Slavia Prague earlier this month, but he’s yet to really come into his own in the Premier League for Spurs, to fully back up Como scout Ben Mattinson’s claims that he is a “future £100m” asset.

On the contrary, one former Leeds academy product – who played alongside Gray in spurts at Thorp Arch – has arguably blossomed into an even bigger talent than the 19-year-old just 18 months on from his Elland Road farewell.

£22m star is an even bigger talent than Gray after leaving Leeds

For all the Grays of the world who instantly hit the ground running in the senior picture at Leeds, there are multiple other youngsters who never quite cut the mustard, making the daunting jump from youth pitches to men’s football.

Charlie Cresswell will count himself unlucky, though, that he never made a lasting impression on the senior ranks, with Farke noting that he was a “top-class” youngster when he was still on the Leeds books.

Unfortunately, despite this praise, only 14 first-team appearances would be handed to him, leading to Cresswell ultimately seeking pastures new with Toulouse about 18 months ago.

In particular, Cresswell had a seriously superb October, notably named in WhoScored and Sofascore’s team of the month for the big five leagues.

While Gray remained largely rooted to the Spurs bench, the former Leeds centre-back was scoring two goals and assisting one goal. The 6-foot-3 titan also lived up to his billing of being a “leader”, which was handed to him by the aforementioned Mattinson, when winning a mammoth 13 combined tackles and duels versus Rennes at the end of the memorable month.

Gray hasn’t quite hit these same heights yet, despite so much hype being attached to his name, with the 19-year-old more of a work-in-progress project in North London.

In contrast, Cresswell has proven himself to be the real deal at Toulouse, already, and the one that got away from Leeds’ perspective, as he is now tipped to make a £22m return to England with Spurs’ London rivals in West Ham United.

Wolves: Lage faces ‘massive’ headache

Wolves have been dealt a major blow ahead of their clash with Watford after injuries to two of their right wing-back options, says insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown

Wolves host Watford on Thursday night looking to halt a three-match losing run.

They’ve been without Nelson Semedo since their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on 24 February (the first game in that sequence).

Semedo won’t be back until the middle of April after picking up a thigh injury.

Ki-Jana Hoever deputised, only to then suffer an an injury himself in the first half of Saturday’s loss against Crystal Palace.

The latest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said that Lage simply couldn’t have accounted for this set of circumstances.

And he thinks the RWB role is key in the Portuguese’s set-up.

“It’s a massive problem,” he said. “It’s a position that offers so much to this Wolves system and he wouldn’t have seen it coming.”

The verdict

You could question whether Hoever would have started even if he’d overcome the issue.

Lage ripped into the youngster after the game at Molineux, suggesting that he expected to be a regular starter without putting in the requisite work.

And The Express and Star’s Liam Keen noted that he ‘struggled’ up against Wilfried Zaha in the brief time he was on the pitch.

Lage has confirmed that Jonny Castro Otto will make his first start of the season versus Watford, and he thankfully does have 55 games’ worth of experience playing on the right side of the defence.

In other news, Jones is confused by this Jimenez situation.

Newcastle: Matt Targett was an unsung hero

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side won for the sixth time in seven games as they triumphed 2-1 against Southampton at St Mary’s on Thursday night.

Stuart Armstrong bundled the ball home from close range after sloppy defending from the Magpies as he was the quickest to react in the six-yard box. The hosts had other chances to be out of sight in the first half as Armando Broja and Che Adams both spurned opportunities.

Newcastle rode out Southampton’s strong start and got back in the game when Chris Wood brilliantly headed to the net from a sumptuous cross by Jonjo Shelvey to make it 1-1 before half-time.

Bruno Guimaraes then scored the winning goal on his full debut for the club as he backheeled the ball into the roof of the net on the volley, securing the three points in style.

Forget Bruno

Whilst the Brazilian may steal the headlines with his stunning strike, there were a number of impressive performances which may go under the radar. January signing Matt Targett was an unsung hero at left-back as he put in a sublime display down the flank.

The on-loan defender caught the eye at both ends of the pitch and Howe will surely be buzzing with how the 26-year-old handled himself throughout the match.

Defensively, he was solid. As per SofaScore, the £35k-per-week dynamo won a whopping 90% of his individual duels, coming out on top in nine of his 10 battles against the opposition. He ended the match with five clearances, one block, two interceptions and four tackles to his name, which shows how much effort he put into the defensive side of his performance.

Targett dominated his opponents with his strength and was then able to read the game to make key interventions and clearances to protect Martin Dubravka’s goal.

On the ball, he was a useful outlet. As per SofaScore, he completed both of his attempted dribbles, played three successful crosses and registered two key passes. This shows that he was able to merge rock-solid defending with quality in possession to create chances for his team-mates in the final third.

It was a complete performance from the left-back, who was able to win the majority of his defensive duels and then utilise his own ability on the ball to make things happen at the other end. This is why he was Howe’s unsung hero against the Saints on Thursday.
