18 months after leaving Leeds, £22m star is a bigger talent than Archie Gray
It’s a very Merry Christmas to be a fan of Leeds United, with the revitalised Whites sealing a 4-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace last time out to keep their red-hot form in December up.
Indeed, Daniel Farke’s men are yet to actually taste defeat across the jam-packed month, with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea also sticking out, away from the sensational success over Oliver Glasner’s team, ramping up the festive cheer at Elland Road.
Leeds look set to go against the idea that the newly promoted sides are just relegation fodder ready to be swallowed up by the bigger teams, with Farke and Co only two points shy off Tottenham Hotspur occupying 14th spot, who have former West Yorkshire prodigy Archie Gray on their books.
Safe to say, he has experienced an up-and-down stay in North London since walking away from his boyhood employers.
How Archie Gray has developed since leaving Leeds
Gray’s senior stint at Leeds would go by in the blink of an eye, with one standout season in the Championship for the Whites enough to attract the attention of Spurs in the division above.
The Premier League giants forked out a high £30m for the teenager’s services in the summer of 2024, and while it hasn’t entirely been a smooth ride for Gray so far at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there have been enough glimpses here and there of his top quality to justify that lavish price tag.
59 first-team appearances have passed him by with no goals or assists, but his versatile nature will surely have impressed Thomas Frank at the Spurs helm, with Gray lining up all across the defence, as well as completing his usual midfield duties.
The under-pressure Dane has also waxed lyrical about the England U21 regular in Champions League action this season, with Gray lauded as being “joyful to watch” and an assured member of the senior side against Paris St Germain by his manager.
He has stood out on the continental stage of late, notably winning four duels and making two tackles against Slavia Prague earlier this month, but he’s yet to really come into his own in the Premier League for Spurs, to fully back up Como scout Ben Mattinson’s claims that he is a “future £100m” asset.
On the contrary, one former Leeds academy product – who played alongside Gray in spurts at Thorp Arch – has arguably blossomed into an even bigger talent than the 19-year-old just 18 months on from his Elland Road farewell.
£22m star is an even bigger talent than Gray after leaving Leeds
For all the Grays of the world who instantly hit the ground running in the senior picture at Leeds, there are multiple other youngsters who never quite cut the mustard, making the daunting jump from youth pitches to men’s football.
Charlie Cresswell will count himself unlucky, though, that he never made a lasting impression on the senior ranks, with Farke noting that he was a “top-class” youngster when he was still on the Leeds books.
Unfortunately, despite this praise, only 14 first-team appearances would be handed to him, leading to Cresswell ultimately seeking pastures new with Toulouse about 18 months ago.

That has proven to be the making of the Preston-born star, with the 23-year-old sticking out as a constant in the heart of the Ligue 1 side’s defence ever since sealing a switch to the South of France, as can be seen by his glowing numbers above.

In particular, Cresswell had a seriously superb October, notably named in WhoScored and Sofascore’s team of the month for the big five leagues.
While Gray remained largely rooted to the Spurs bench, the former Leeds centre-back was scoring two goals and assisting one goal. The 6-foot-3 titan also lived up to his billing of being a “leader”, which was handed to him by the aforementioned Mattinson, when winning a mammoth 13 combined tackles and duels versus Rennes at the end of the memorable month.
Gray hasn’t quite hit these same heights yet, despite so much hype being attached to his name, with the 19-year-old more of a work-in-progress project in North London.
In contrast, Cresswell has proven himself to be the real deal at Toulouse, already, and the one that got away from Leeds’ perspective, as he is now tipped to make a £22m return to England with Spurs’ London rivals in West Ham United.
